Want to learn all about Manx folklore? The friendly Fynoderee, the Bugganes, Teeval the Queen and the fairies themselves are your to discover in a new novel Fynoderee, just out in the Isle of Man.
Yesterday I went down to WH Smith in Strand Street to meet the author Alenxander Caine Duncan (v v v cute) and he dedicated a copy to little ol’ me. Now I’ve got my nose pressed to the pages. So far, it’s a good book! You can get your copy at WH Smiths and Waterstones (Ottakar’s) in Strand Street. Hurry while stocks last!
I went to check out Red at Zaks last night. What a fun band! Six pieces (if you include the girl with the tambourine) covering some great indie stuff and some classics too. So we got everything from the Stereophonics to The Who to Lynard Synard.
The audience loved it! Well, it was getting pretty late in evening and it seemed that the bar takings were good, if you know what I mean. But it everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time.
Fun! Fun! Fun!
I hear that Red, the six-piece indie band, is playing two gigs tonight. First up at The Office they take the stage around 9ish. Then hotfoot it over to Zaks for their 11 pm show. Two shows in one night? Twice as nice!
Next weekend sees the return of Mother Vulpine, a four-piece band from Leeds that was over in the summer, and for alot of people, they were the highlight of Willstock.
Live these guys really are jaw dropping. If you were at Willstock and saw them you’ll already have your table reserved, if you didn’t catch them here’s your chance to see what all the fuss is about. For a bit of a warm up have a look and listen by clicking
here.
They’re playing The Cornerhouse 17th November (£2 entry) and The Creek 18th November (free entry). Support acts include Nanaki and Chris Flood at The Cornerhouse…. Beek and Gratiz3 at The Creek.
Remember a few months ago I wrote about an Isle of Man curry house getting short listed for the British Curry Awards? Well The Millennium Saagar didn’t win, but making the short list is still pretty darn good, right? So we decided to finally try it out last night. And it was nice.
That’s it though. Just nice. Not outstanding. Not amazing. Not wow. Just fine. Service was friendly. Linens were fresh. It was a nice evening out. Not award winning.
Mark your calendar! The Rock the Rock music festival is set for 28 & 29 July 2007 at Noble’s Park in Douglas. It aims to attract 35,000 people, but no acts have been named so far. Everyone is invited to suggest who’d they like to see at the festival website. Coldplay and U2 are both listed as top suggestions, but Candy would rather see the Arctic Monkeys and Scissor Sisters. Hopefully there’ll be room for all of them on the bill.
The Steam Packet has commited to running extra services during the festival and a new charity partner has recently been announced. Spectrum, a co-operative of five Manx charities, will get a percentage of the profits from the festival. It’s going to be great.
Front page news in the Isle of Man is that Robin Gibb is looking to buy a house in Peel. Yipee! He was always my favourite BeeGee. Those blue specs really do it for me!
He was born here and his Mum still lives here. I can’t wait to run into him down the M&S. Still it would have been nice if he had taken the time to speak to the hometown newspaper instead of just issuing a statement. Maybe he’ll actually talk to us after the deal on his new house goes through.
So I’m stopping by ShopRite on Strand Street to run in and quickly pick up a few things for dindins. I figure pop in, pop out, be on my way, right? Wrong. They’re remodelling it again. What a bother. Nothing is where I remember. Aisle upon aisle of empty shelves. Couldn’t find a thing I wanted. Left empty handed. Thanks ShopRite for making my Friday lunchtime a joy. NOT.
Where am I? Well I’ve been away travelling abroad and not really keeping up on things in the Isle of Man. But I’m back now. And I’ll start posting regularly again. Watch this space!
Er, it seems they’re planning on changing the name of our fair isle to the Isle of Woman this October. There’s going to be lots of fun things to do including a Marti Pellow concert (yuck!), Cabaret Night (fun!), and a Pink Casino Fun day (dunno?).
You can even buy a calendar of the the Gas Guys, featuring delicious nude guys from the Island’s gas industry.
It could be a lot of fun, and it’s for a good cause, Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
